In the Hall of Arms, you can admire the elaborate Medieval decor. we take our jobs seriously and we want to be treated with the same respect. My lords and ladies - Welcome to Medieval Times! Inside Queen Maria Isabella's fully enclosed, 11th Century-style Castle, you'll indulge in a night of feasting, combat, and revelry. Zapcic said, "There was a dismissiveness and feeling that the company views us as replaceable and having a union really sets us apart and shows that. Upon hearing Zapcic's comparison to Broadway shows, she said Medieval Times management responded, "You're not Broadway. Many knights and squires will have to perform in nearly every show during this busy season. They put up to 10 to 16 shows during a normal week compared to most Broadway shows' eight, but the number can go up to 21 between Christmas and New Year's Day. Zapcic compared Medieval Times shows to Broadway shows, seating about the same number of people and putting on more shows a week. The horses and falcon that the show rely on also add an element of uncertainty for workers' safety, particularly for stablehands who can make $16 an hour. A knight who previously worked as a squire at the New Jersey castle made $12 an hour. Those who want to become knights and aspire to go into athletics or become a stunt performer typically start off as squires, who make "essentially minimum wage," Zapcic told the LA Times. "There should be a correlation between how dangerous their job is and how they're compensated." "The job will always be dangerous for the guys, but they should be compensated accordingly," she said. These dangerous duties have led to ankle, knee, and head injuries, according to performers in New Jersey, and knights do them all for about $19 to $29 an hour. The votes at Buena Park and New Jersey castles have created a domino effect company-wide, as more castles have expressed their interest to unionize, Zapcic said. Medieval Times did not contest the petitioned-for bargaining unit in New Jersey, according to Medieval Times Performers United. "The Regional Director saw through the employer's meritless arguments and correctly found that a single bargaining unit is appropriate." "Medieval Times tried to separate and divide its California workers after it agreed to a single bargaining unit in New Jersey and then lost the election by a lopsided margin," Spivak Lipton LLP attorney Nicholas Johnson said in a statement. Medieval Times did not respond to a request for comment. Medieval Times argued that knights and squires do not share a "community of interest" with the show cast and stablehands. Medieval Times delayed the union election date by contesting that only Knights and Squires should be allowed in the union, excluding the show cast and stables department, according to Medieval Times Performers United California on Aug. The Medieval Times has 10 locations across North America, including Atlanta, Ga, Chicago, Il, and Toronto, Ontario. "The company really used the time to sow the seeds of discord, create a divide within the bargaining unit, and so based off the way things were going and the people we were talking to, even though we started with a super majority of the bargaining unit, there was considerable attrition or at least so it seemed throughout the process," Zapcic said.īuena Park performers petitioned for a union election on July 22 following the vote at the New Jersey location in July, she said. The vote marks the end to a nearly four-month journey for performers at Buena Park to unionize due to delays caused by company management, she said. I’m certainly a sucker for interdimensional rifts, and while Oxenfree is using them on a much smaller scale than, say, Ratchet and Clank, it seems no less integral to Oxenfree II’s story. There’s only one problem - they’re trying to pull off this bit of platforming and puzzle solving as the mines are, indeed, crumbling around them. Thankfully, in this time period, there’s a working elevator that, through a bit of quick puzzle solving, Riley and Jacob get moving in order to help them reach another time tear and return to their point of origin. In this case, the duo, while venturing through the tunnels that spread all throughout Camena (a surely handy exploration device for a world the developers estimate is about 2.5-3 times bigger than Edwards Island, though they noted players shouldn’t necessarily expect a sequel that’s three times as long to play), discovers a time tear that brings them back all the way to 1899, back before the mines were abandoned after a major collapse. They’ll allow Riley and her companions to journey through time to a point that will hopefully offer some assistance in their journey. You see, time tears have started opening up around Camena. I guess it’s also worth mentioning that Jacob was nervous because, well, he and Riley had ended up in 1899. It’s so key for moments like that to not feel kitschy and to be rooted in who these characters are, and it made me appreciate the scene all the more. That little game, more importantly, stems from a character beat - Jacob is pretty freaked out by everything happening, and the game helps to calm his nerves. I love moments like that, and have in Night School’s past games, so if the team can continue to deliver those personal, witty scenes like they do here, I can’t wait to see what else we might discuss while exploring Camena. You always have more forks in the road and more micro-choices on how to get to certain spots.”Īnother particular highlight demonstrating the relatable nature of the characters came when Jacob and Riley played a game in which they told each other a story word by word. There's very few times when there's just one path to get up or down. “It also pushed us to design the environments in ways that would allow those types of moments to actually occur. We wanted you to be making choices with your physical decisions about what you're doing and how you want to go about that,” Studio Lead Writer Adam Hines told IGN. “It was definitely an initial goal of ours: we wanted more choices that aren't dialogue-based. Even a small decision like that could lead to new permutations in conversation, and I’m fascinated to see how scenes can play out differently, as a moment like this was something emblematic of what the developers strove for in the sequel. Jacob takes a much safer route, climbing down a rock wall to help her back up. A small example we saw involved Riley trying to cross an ultimately un-jumpable gap by, well, jumping it, falling to a rock a little below. Thankfully, Oxenfree II seems to continue to nail that tone of realistic, casual conversation that Night School excelled at in both the original and Afterparty, and Oxenfree II looks to make the player’s choices matter even more this time around. The first game’s dialogue blended West Wing-paced chatter with Veronica Mars-esque wit, and though these characters are older, that blend still feels right at home as Riley and her friend Jacob explored Camena in the section of gameplay I saw.Īt the end of the day, a game like Oxenfree will live or die by how charming, or at least interesting, these characters are, particularly given that players are constantly making dialogue choices. Her confident tone, mixing a bit of snark with an undertone of warmth, fits right at home in Night School’s chatty world. There will be plenty of acknowledgements to the first game’s story, and in fact, the developers have even been updating the original Oxenfree on PC with new audio clips that help bridge the story of this sequel’s villains, Parentage, with the original game.īut the focus seems to primarily be on Riley’s story. A new cast doesn’t mean your time with the original Oxenfree will be for nought, whether you played years ago, revisit before the sequel, or are just picking it up now. Players interested in participating in the closed beta test for the game can register at. We'll be sharing more details on the storyline and game itself in the weeks to come." The Godfather: Five Families marks the first time a major movie franchise has expanded its storylines to the social gaming world. "The Godfather saga provides an incredibly engaging foundation from which to create an authentic, multi-layered and compelling game. "The Godfather: Five Families will immerse players in a persistent world of Prohibition era New York gangsters where families and players battle for wealth and power as they build their empires," said Larry Koh, General Manager, Kabam and Executive Producer for the game. Among the number of ways the game will differ from casual social games with similar themes is that it will be more competitive, with a greater emphasis on combat and battle objectives as well as game mechanics and a reward system that encourages activity, including PvP and Family vs. Designed to engage those who seek a deeper, more engaging game experience, The Godfather: Five Families offers a strategy and RPG game-style with competitive interaction and game play that can be enjoyed for hours. The massively multiplayer social game will feature the famous "Five Families" of The Godfather world in an open-ended storyline that will allow players to create their own destinies. "Combining the drama and intrigue of warring crime families with thousands of real players trying to amass their own power and wealth in the game presents a compelling new way for fans to experience the world of the films." The Godfather: Five Families will combine elements of highly immersive MMO-style play with the connectivity and interaction of social networks. "The rich heritage of The Godfather franchise is well suited for deep multiplayer social gaming," said John Kavanagh, Senior Vice President of Video Games for Paramount Digital Entertainment. The films won nine Academy Awards, including "Best Picture" for each of the first two movie installments, and garnered over 20 Academy Award nominations. The original movie, The Godfather, ranked #2 on the American Film Institute's list, "100 Years… 100 Movies." The Godfather II was ranked #32 on the same AFI list, making it the only film series thus honored with multiple inclusions. The Godfather movie series is one of the most venerated film franchises ever created. The Godfather: Five Families will be constructed with careful attention to detail to capture the authenticity of the epic chronicle of mafia warfare, loyalty and intrigue. The Godfather: Five Families will also be the first MMSG and MMO game on the Facebook Platform based on a mafia theme with synchronous gameplay where millions of players can play and combat each other in real time. "The Godfather: Five Families will transport millions of players to a living world of 1930s gangsters and family alliances that will transcend what any other mafia-style social game has offered to date." The Godfather: Five Families will introduce new social gameplay features specifically designed for this game, theme and story. "It's an honor to create a new massively multiplayer social game based on one of the greatest entertainment brands of all time," said Chris Carvalho, Chief Operating Officer of Kabam. Vedic symbolic practice Īccording to Romila Thapar, in the Vedic period, when "mores of the clan gave way to the norms of caste", wives were obliged to join in quite a few rituals but without much authority. She considers sati to be a largely symbolic double burial or a double cremation, a feature she argues is to be found in both cultures, with neither culture observing it strictly. The archaeologist Elena Efimovna Kuzmina has listed several parallels between the burial practices of the ancient Asiatic steppe Andronovo cultures (fl. It has been speculated that rituals such as widow sacrifice or widow burning have prehistoric roots. The origins and spread of the practice of sati are complex and much debated questions, without a general consensus. The Indian Commission of Sati (Prevention) Act, 1987 Part I, Section 2(c) defines sati as the act or rite itself. Satipratha is also, on occasion, used as a term signifying the custom of burning widows alive.Anvarohana ("ascension" to the pyre) is occasionally met, as well as satidaha as terms to designate the process.Sahagamana ("going with") or sahamarana ("dying with").Satimata denotes a venerated widow who committed sati.Sativrata, an uncommon and seldom used term, denotes the woman who makes a vow, vrata, to protect her husband while he is alive and then die with her husband.Sati designates therefore originally the woman, rather than the rite. Sati appears in Hindi and Sanskrit texts, where it is synonymous with "good wife" the term suttee was commonly used by Anglo-Indian English writers. The term sati was originally interpreted as " chaste woman". Sati ( Sanskrit: सती / satī) is derived from the name of the goddess Sati, who self-immolated because she was unable to bear her father Daksha's humiliation of her and her husband Shiva. The modern laws have proved difficult to implement as of 2020, at least 250 sati temples existed in India in which prayer ceremonies, or pujas, were performed to glorify the avatar of a mother goddess who immolated herself on a husband's funeral pyre after hearing her father insult him prayers were also performed to the practice of a wife immolating herself alive on a deceased husband's funeral pyre. Isolated incidents of sati were recorded in India in the late-20th century, leading the Indian government to promulgate the Sati (Prevention) Act, 1987, criminalising the aiding or glorifying of sati. Ram Mohan Roy observed that when women allow themselves to be consigned to the funeral pyre of a deceased husband it results not just "from religious prejudices only", but, "also from witnessing the distress in which widows of the same rank in life are involved, and the insults and slights to which they are daily subject." Other legislation followed, countering what the British perceived to be interrelated issues involving violence against Hindu women, including the Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act, 1856, Female Infanticide Prevention Act, 1870, and Age of Consent Act, 1891. Opposition to the practice of sati by evangelists like Carey, and by Hindu reformers such as Ram Mohan Roy ultimately led the British Governor-General of India Lord William Bentinck to enact the Bengal Sati Regulation, 1829, declaring the practice of burning or burying alive of Hindu widows to be punishable by the criminal courts. Between 18 the number of incidents of sati in Bengal doubled from 378 to 839. In the early 19th century, the British East India Company, in the process of extending its rule to most of India, initially tolerated the practice William Carey, a British Christian evangelist, noted 438 incidents within a 30-mile (48-km) radius of the capital, Calcutta, in 1803, despite its ban within Calcutta. ĭuring the early-modern Mughal period of 1526–1857, it was notably associated with elite Hindu Rajput clans in western India, marking one of the points of divergence between Hindu Rajputs and the Muslim Mughals, who banned the practice. Greek sources from around 300 BCE make isolated mention of sati, but it probably developed into a real fire sacrifice in the medieval era within the northwestern Rajput clans to which it initially remained limited, to become more widespread during the late medieval era. A cold form of sati, or the neglect and casting out of Hindu widows, has been prevalent from ancient times. Although it is debated whether it received scriptural mention in early Hinduism, it has been linked to related Hindu practices in the Indo-Aryan-speaking regions of India which diminished the rights of women, especially those to the inheritance of property. Sati or suttee was a historical practice in which a widow sacrifices herself by sitting atop her deceased husband's funeral pyre. The word feisty – "energetic, belligerent, esp. chiefly dial: a small dog of uncertain ancestry." The word "feist" is described in Webster's Third New International Dictionary as from the obsolete word "fysting", meaning "breaking wind, in such expressions as fysting dog or fysting hound". Various named varieties within the feist type have been developed, including the Mountain Feists, which includes the Baldwin Feist, Buckley Feist, DenMark Feist, Galla Creek Feist, Kemmer Feist, Lost Creek Feist, Sport-bred Feist, and Thornburg Feist. Although they put up a furious chase, feists rarely catch squirrels they typically expect their owners to shoot them. Leashing these dogs in the presence of squirrels is advisable. During the chase, they wade through streams, leap over logs, and dash across roads to get to their prey. When they have treed a squirrel, they chase the squirrel until it leaves their sight. They locate squirrels using their eyes, ears, and nose, then tree them barking loudly and circling the tree, in the same manner that a coonhound trees raccoons. When hunting, feists, unlike hounds, are mostly silent on track until they tree a squirrel. Most feists have an extreme drive to chase rabbits, along with squirrels and other rodents. This contrasts with terriers or Dachshunds, earth dogs that go to ground to kill or drive out the prey, usually rodents, rabbits, foxes, or badgers. Individual dogs can hunt in more than one way, but in general, feists work above ground to chase small prey, especially squirrels. They are identified more by the way they hunt and their size than by their appearance. As feists are bred for hunting, not as show dogs, little to no consistency is seen in appearance (breed type), and they may be purebred, crossbred, or mixed-breed dogs. The tail can be natural, bobtail, or docked. The ears are set high on the head and are button, erect, or short hang. Some of these dogs have been crossed with Greyhounds, Whippets or Italian Greyhounds (for speed), and Beagles or other hounds (for hunting ability)-extending the family to include a larger variety of purpose than the original ratter, or Rat Terrier.įeists are small to medium-sized dogs 10 to 18 in (25 to 46 cm) tall, and weigh 15 to 30 lb (6.8 to 14 kg), short-coated dogs with long legs. These dogs were used as ratters, and gambling on their prowess in killing rats was a favorite hobby of their owners. These terriers probably included crosses between the Smooth Fox Terrier, the Manchester Terrier, and the now-extinct English White Terrier. Treeing Feist, Treeing Terrier, Ratting Terrier, Rat TerrierĪ feist is a small hunting dog, descended from the terriers brought over to the United States by British miners and other immigrants. |
